x can equal any value you want. We are looking for x values that give an output of 0, i.e. when f(x) = 0 which we call solutions or roots.

We use trial and error to find the first of these values in a cubic function. We usually try x=1, then x=2, then x=3 etc... When I tried x=1 I found that it does not give an output = 0 so it isn't a root. So then I tried x = 2 and found that this value worked ...
